Stockholm’s official visitor site, Visit Stockholm.
Visit Stockholm is a web site published by Stockholm Business Region which in itself is a company owned by Stockholm City Council. It is Stockholm’s official visitors guide. The current website was launched in March 2009.
For a website that has it’s roots in design and platform built in 2009, a rating of 6.6 is quite respectable although not outstanding. It nevertheless matches the 6.6 rating that Stockholm Stad (Stockholm City Council) received earlier this year.
Disclosure: James Royal-Lawson assisted SBR as webmaster during April to August 2012. During this time James managed to raise the rating from 6.2 to 6.6.
The website has some notable misses from a web-tech viewpoint. Gzip is not enabled, increasing the size of the payload downloaded to a visitors browser. It also lacks content-caching headers, which reduces the amount caching can be utilised to speed up page loading.
Images are an important part of the site, and care should be taken to ensure that all images are optimised. Visit Stockholm doesn’t make use of a content delivery network or serve images from a cookieless domain.
There are a number of accessibility issues. Images have been used in the navigation and no textual fall back has been provided. Alt and title attributes are usually present, but their use is inconsistent – with many alt descriptions containing photo credits rather than describing the image itself.
Visit Stockholm with a few technical adjustments, little bit of extra consistency and some consideration for accessbility could easily achieve a rating of over 7.
