Avantime is a full-service digital agency. Their website, amongst other things, outlines their services and shows customer cases. The current WordPress-based website was launched in September 2012, replacing their previous site from May 2010.

Rating breakdown

WordPress based websites normally get quite a good rating due to the quality of WordPress “out of the box”. Avantime though have failed to push-on from there and for a newly built WordPress website 6.2 is quite a disappointing score.

The failure to build on WordPress is evident from the rating breakdown – webtech was the category where Avantime excelled. Scores in other categories such as SEO, accessibility, usability and content were all low.

The site, like many launched in 2012, is responsive and adjusts the layout when viewed with a narrower browser viewport. The breakpoint is set so that many devices in landscape mode will get to see the full desktop site. As no other way exists to force the site into the desktop version, this is useful.

Alternative language versions of pages are available and linked to each other using hreflang. Unfortunately, it’s not completely implemented following Google’s recommendation. Neither is the language of the actual webpage indicated correctly.

Amongst the curiocities unearthed during the reviewing process was how 20 images from Flickr are requested with every page view. This is slowing down the website by a significant amount and unlikely to be adding to the user experience.

Avantime’s new website forms a good base, but sloppiness in many areas has held back it’s score. A little bit of tweaking and adjustment will help alleviate that.

Rated using Beantin Index V1.0.

  1. Hi James,

Thanks for the rating and the valuable feedback (I also read “the hidden impact of those extra little features”). We’ll take your comments into account and I’m sure we’ll have an updated version launched before this week is over. Be sure to check back in!
